Breakfast Seminar Hosted by Planalytics & HRC Advisory’s Antony KarabusFebruary 1, 2013
HRC Advisory’s Antony Karabus and Planalytics hosted a breakfast presentation on Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Toronto. The event focused on the impact of weather on sales and profitability. This was a key, timely topic for retailers given the extreme unfavorable conditions this winter.
They discussed how so few retailers are effectively using weather intelligence to:
-Understand and measure the impact that weather has on demand (for specific product categories, store traffic/transactions, etc.)
-Project the effect that weather will have on future selling seasons.
-Determine when and where demand will be higher or lower due to weather.
-More effectively align inventory, marketing, promotions, and pricing with weather-driven demand.
-Planalytics provided a review of how weather has influenced Canadian consumers this past season and a preview of weather-driven opportunities and risks for the early spring period. Karabus described a number of ideas and opportunities for how retailers in different sectors could manage to mitigate the impact of the unseasonable, extreme weather.
Focus areas included:
-An overview of Business Weather Intelligence and how businesses use it to capitalize on weather-related opportunities.
-Understanding the pitfalls of planning off of last year (or averages) and the benefits of removing weather’s influence from historical sales by product, by market and by time period.
-Weather-Driven Demand: Quantifying weather’s impact and applying it to your pre-season planning and in-season decisions.
-WeatherSmart Marketing: Using weather insights to optimize marketing programs.
-Case Study Examples in demand forecasting, allocation/replenishment, operations, marketing, sales analysis and more.
